In today’s fast-paced world, feeling unbalanced and disconnected is a common experience. Stress, anxiety, and overthinking can pull us away from the present moment, making it difficult to feel centred. This is where grounding—also known as earthing—comes in. Grounding helps restore physical and mental equilibrium, offering a simple yet powerful way to cultivate inner peace.
What is Grounding?
Grounding refers to practices that connect you to the present moment, bringing awareness to your body and environment. It can be both physical—interacting with the Earth’s energy—or mental, involving mindfulness techniques that bring focus and clarity. It is a staple tool used in my somatic therapy practice.
Physical Grounding Techniques
Walking Barefoot (Earthing) – According to the Journal of Environmental and Public Health, direct skin contact with the Earth’s surface helps regulate biological rhythms, reduce inflammation, and improve sleep. Walk on grass, sand, or soil for a natural energy reset.
Body-Based Exercises – Engaging in activities like yoga, tai chi, or dancing can help you feel more connected to your body, promoting relaxation and balance.
Cold Water Therapy – Splashing cold water on your face, taking cold showers, or swimming in natural bodies of water can quickly bring you back to the present moment.
Holding Natural Objects – Holding a stone, piece of wood, or any natural element can create a sensory experience that reinforces a grounded state.
Deep Breathing & Vagal Nerve Activation – Slow, intentional breaths stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and enhancing relaxation.
Mental & Emotional Grounding Techniques
5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Awareness Exercise – Acknowledge five things you see, four things you feel, three things you hear, two things you smell, and one thing you taste to reconnect with your surroundings.
Mindfulness Meditation – Research published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that mindfulness reduces anxiety and improves overall well-being.
Journaling – Writing down thoughts and feelings can help externalise stress and foster clarity.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation – Tensing and then slowly relaxing different muscle groups can help you release built-up tension.
Mantras & Affirmations – Repeating grounding affirmations like “I am safe, I am present” reinforces a sense of security and calm.
Grounding in Somatic Therapies: The Role of TRE®
Somatic therapies focus on releasing stored trauma and tension from the body. Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®), developed by Dr. David Berceli, use neurogenic tremors to discharge deep-seated stress. According to Berceli, grounding is essential in TRE® because it helps integrate the tremor response, ensuring that the nervous system resets safely. Grounding also helps to prevent the risk of dissociation during the TRE® shaking process.
The Benefits of Grounding
Reduces Stress & Anxiety – Grounding lowers cortisol levels and enhances the body's relaxation response.
Improves Sleep – Studies show that earthing stabilizes circadian rhythms, leading to better rest.
Boosts Immunity – Connecting with nature and engaging in mindfulness improves immune function.
Enhances Mental Clarity – Grounding techniques improve focus, reduce rumination, and promote emotional balance.
Supports Trauma Healing – In therapies like TRE®, grounding ensures a sense of safety during deep emotional releases.
Grounding is an accessible and powerful tool for reclaiming balance in body and mind. Whether through barefoot walking, breathwork, or somatic therapies like TRE®, regular grounding practices can significantly enhance your well-being. In an age of constant digital distractions, returning to the Earth—both physically and mentally—may be the key to a healthier, more present life.
